Di bawah komando Morten Vaupel, Novo Nordisk Indonesia bertransformasi dari perusahaan farmasi menjadi korporasi perawatan kesehatan. Simak bagaimana ia membantu Indonesia atasi epidemi diabetes.

Morten Vaupel: The Chief Wellness Officer

Under the leadership of Morten Vaupel, Novo Nordisk Indonesia transforms from a pharmaceutical company to a healthcare one. Read on to learn how he helps Indonesia tackle the diabetes epidemic.

HAVING worked for 22 years for Novo Nordisk, Morten Vaupel is an exemplary figure of how working hard to maintain trust eventually bears the sweetest fruits. He never had a single thought of becoming a CEO. He only focuses on doing his best.

“I’m glad to be part of a company offering strong values to others,” the Danish man told Warta Ekonomi team on September 24, 2018, at Novo Nordisk Indonesia (NNI) headquarters, South Jakarta.

Taking Care of Trust

As a leader in a foreign country is no big problem to him. “When you’ve had a 22-year career in the industry, you’ll know what to do in the business so you can focus on how to do it right with the people understanding their culture,” stated Vaupel who started his career as a business analyst.

He truly reflects the culture and work ethos of Scandinavian people. “We have high trust in you but you may lose it unless you take care of it,” remarked the alumnus of International Institute for Management Development, Lausanne. If well maintained, he is certain that trust would let him handle bigger responsibility.

Maintaining Health

Four years ago, he initiated Cities Changing Diabetes (CCD), a campaign to overcome type 2 diabetes in Mexico City. By now, he campaign has reached 17 cities all over the globe, including Jakarta.

Focusing on diabetes treatment, NNI collaborates with Jakarta City Province Government to tackle type 2 diabetes epidemic in the capital. “The unhealthy lifestyle of urban people is due to lack of physical activity, different eating habits and low awareness of healthy life need. The number of diabetes cases in urban areas is around 50% higher than one in countryside.” He underlined the fact that about 10-12 million Indonesians are diabetics and most are not aware and not properly treated. In fact, with proper treatment, they can stay productive, which is good for individuals and the society. What also matters is various preventive measures.

Vaupel praised the National Healthcare Program (JKN) that the government has launched. “That’s very impressive! Never did I hear any other countries providing healthcare to 250 million citizens in just 5 years,” lauded the former general manager of Hungary and Mexico.

In the next 3 years, Vaupel plans to boost the company’s sales in Indonesia. “Last year we agreed to create an ambition to double the scale of company and its business in 3 years. We’re now 1.5 years in, and half way to the target,” spoke Vaupel.

After more than 90 years of operation, NNI aspires more. “We do not call ourselves a pharmaceutical company, but a healthcare company, as we aim to improve people’s health,” explained Vaupel who speaks 3 languages fluently. The involvement of NNI in the prevention and education of public, academicians, and health practitioners on diabetes proves it.

Working in a company that pays much attention to healthy lifestyles affects my lifestyle, too.”

Vaupel said he has yogurt and fruits as his breakfast. Novo Nordisk’s office in Jakarta also provides a health check-up service. People there are also encouraged to consume fresh vegetables and fruits as daily menu.

Besides the healthy and balanced lifestyle, Vaupel who was born in a family of businessmen and artists has always seen music as an essential part of his life. His mother is a celebrated opera singer; while his sister is quite a renowned actress in their homeland. In his younger days, the CEO was a huge fan of Prince and Genesis. “As I grow older, my taste of music turns to jazz,” the father of two daughters admitted. In Indonesia, he makes time to go to the annually held music festivity, Java Jazz Festival. He admires the quality and all of the singers performing on stage.

Aside from music, he finds his ‘oases’ in sports. Every morning, he jogs for 5 kilometers. Twice a week, he works out with a personal trainer and plays golf. With the family, he also learns to dive as a hobbyist. They are now certified divers after taking the course in Bunaken. With the skills, he is set to explore many more attractive diving spots in Indonesia. (*/)
