Optimismenya yang membuncah terus mendorong L\u2019Or\u00e9al Indonesia ke puncak.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BERPENDIDIKAN formal sebagai insinyur, tampak musykil bagi <strong>Umesh Phadke<\/strong> untuk tertarik pada industri kecantikan. Namun, pebisnis berkebangsaan India ini berhasil buktikan <em>passion-<\/em>nya yang tak lekang selama 23 tahun di salah satu perusahaan kosmetik terbesar dunia, L\u2019Or\u00e9al.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apa yang membuatnya bersemangat? Pada suatu malam saat ia menyambangi kediaman seorang teman. Ia bawakan sejumlah produk L\u2019Or\u00e9al untuk istri temannya dan terpukau dengan reaksi wanita itu. \u201cIa begitu gembira sampai menari-nari karena hadiah saya. Itu membuat saya bersemangat dalam bekerja,\u201d ia mengenang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ia sadar ini bukan sekadar menjual kosmetik. \u201cPekerjaan saya juga berkenaan dengan bagaimana membuat orang bahagia, merasa lebih cantik dan bergairah dalam menjalani hidup. Itulah tujuan paling utama saya dalam bekerja,\u201d ungkapnya pada tim <em>Warta Ekonomi <\/em>di DBS Tower, Jakarta, 23 Maret 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Keberanian<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dengan pengalaman 23 tahun di bisnis FMCG, Umesh berani mengambil keputusan yang berdampak besar. Dulu ia dengan berani beralih ke marketing setelah 7 tahun mendalami penjualan. Langkah itu memperkaya keterampilannya sebagai Presiden Direktur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pribadi Umesh sesuai dengan Indonesia yang dinamis. \u201cIndonesia memberikan banyak tantangan. Rantai suplai dan distribusi masih jadi salah satu kendala utama berusaha,\u201d ucapnya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Namun, kecantikan berkaitan erat dengan optimisme. \u201cMau krisis atau tidak, perempuan selalu merawat diri,\u201d Umesh berpendapat. Ia perhatikan pertumbuhan ekonomi negara ini bisa membantu pertumbuhan bisnis perusahaan. \u201cIndustri ini tumbuh 1,5 hingga 2 kali lebih cepat dari pertumbuhan ekonomi. Indonesia punya banyak populasi muda, yang masuk pasar tenaga kerja dan berharap tampil menawan, dan untuk itu mereka butuh produk perawatan kecantikan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pemerintahan saat ini juga banyak membantu. Ia menekankan,\u201dPemerintahlah \u2018resep rahasia\u2019 yang membantu menggali semua potensi dengan visi dan kerja kerasnya.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ia punya cara unik untuk optimalkan modal budaya lokal agar lebih berani. \u201cDi kantor, kami gabungkan budaya asal, sosial dan perusahaan. Jadi sambil menjaga keselarasan, saya ingin orang menjadi makin berani juga.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Universalisasi<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Umesh meyakini universalisasi: mendunia sekaligus menghormati hubungan, kebutuhan dan konsumen lokal. Oleh sebab itu, L\u2019Or\u00e9al memasarkan produk berbeda untuk tiap pasar. Contohnya untuk pasar Indonesia, mereka menjual produk dalam <em>sachet<\/em> dengan harga terjangkau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Untuk merengkuh pasar, L\u2019Or\u00e9al berupaya pahami konsumen lewat interaksi di banyak kota, mengumpulkan masukan dan menerjemahkannya sebagai penyempurnaan di lab litbang. Misalnya, dengan naiknya minat pada kosmetik halal, beberapa produk L\u2019Or\u00e9al yang dijual di sini pun sudah bersertifikat halal.<br>Pengembangan dari dalam dan luar menjadi rencananya untuk memimpin pasar. Di dalam ia melatih talenta lokal dengan pendekatan daring. Di luar ia fokus pada pemasaran digital dan <em>ecommerce <\/em>sebagai jawaban atas masalah distribusi. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\u201cIbu berperan penting dalam menjadikan diri saya sebagaimana sekarang.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>UMESH mengingat mendiang ibunya yang ia pandang sebagai panutan dalam mendidik anak. Ia senantiasa membawa foto sang ibu dan dengan bangga menceritakan hal-hal yang pernah ibunya ajarkan padanya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sementara itu, ayahnya membantu Umesh sebagai pribadi yang terbuka pada hal-hal baru. \u201cSaya boleh meminta ayah membelikan buku apa saja,\u201d ia mengenang saat ayahnya membawa dirinya ke toko buku.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tak heran Umesh sangat menggemari buku. Ia membaca buku dari beragam genre, dari fiksi sampai buku perjalanan. Lain dari banyak orang yang membaca satu buku saja dalam sekali waktu, ia membaca banyak buku dalam waktu bersamaan. Tahun ini ia luncurkan klub bukunya sendiri untuk pegawai L\u2019Or\u00e9al yang suka membaca juga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sama beraninya dalam memilih buku, Umesh juga dikenal sebagai pelancong yang pemberani. Ia suka mengunjungi tempat-tempat yang paling jarang dikunjungi turis. \u201cDesember lalu saya sempat ke Antartika,\u201d imbuhnya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sebagai fotografer yang antusias, Umesh sebelumnya telah menggelar pameran foto untuk tujuan pengumpulan dana amal saat masih bekerja selama 5 tahun sebagai <em>Country Managing Director<\/em> di Bangkok. Ia telah menerbitkan buku fotonya sendiri yang isinya foto-foto perjalanan di India. (*\/)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>VERSI BAHASA INGGRIS<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>UMESH PHADKE: THE BEAUTIFICATION CAPTAIN<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Armed with his experience, courage, and passion, Umesh Phadke fully grasps the potential and challenges of Indonesia. His teeming optimism keeps propeling L\u2019Or\u00e9al Indonesia towards the peak.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EDUCATED formally as an engineer, it seemed unlikely for <strong>Umesh Phadke<\/strong> to be interested in the beauty care industry. Yet, the Indian business leader has managed to prove his unwavering passion for the last 23 years at one of the world\u2019s greatest beauty care companies, L\u2019Or\u00e9al.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What makes him passionate? One night he visited a friend. He brought some L\u2019Or\u00e9al products for his friend\u2019s wife and was stunned by her response. \u201cShe couldn\u2019t contain her joy and danced around the house because of my gifts. That reaction made me passionate about my job,\u201d he remembered.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It dawned on him his work entails more than selling cosmetics. \u201cIt\u2019s also about making others happy, feel more beautiful and excited about life. That\u2019s the highest purpose of my work,\u201d he told <em>Warta Ekonomi <\/em>team at DBS Tower, Jakarta, on March 23, 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Boldness<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 23-year veteran of the FMCG business dares to make impactful decisions. Back then he boldly reinvented himself as a marketer after 7 years in sales. It enriched his skills as a country manager later on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His character suits the dynamic Indonesian market. \u201cIndonesia gives many kinds of challenges. Supply chain and distribution are still major issues,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beauty, however, is about optimism. \u201cIn good and bad times, women take care of their beauty,\u201d Umesh argued. He noticed the country\u2019s fast economic growth may aid the company\u2019s business growth. \u201cThe beauty care industry grows 1.5 to 2 times of the economic growth. Indonesia has a young populace, too. They enter the job market hoping to look and feel good, and to do so they need beauty care products.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The current administration also lifts the morale. He emphasized, \u201cIt\u2019s the \u2018secret sauce\u2019 that helps unlock all potentials with their vision and hard work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He has a unique way to embolden local cultural capital. \u201cAt work we need to bring a nice blend of home, social and organizational cultures. So while keeping harmony, I want them to be more courageous too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Universalization<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Umesh has faith in universalization: going global while respecting local relevance, needs and consumers. For that reason, L\u2019Or\u00e9al sells different products in different markets. For example for the Indonesian market, it sells products in sachets at affordable prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To capture the market, it makes continuous efforts to understand consumers by interacting with consumers in many Indonesian cities, gather insights, and translate them into improvement at R&amp;D labs. For instance, as halal cosmetics gains traction, some of L\u2019Or\u00e9al Indonesia\u2019s products have been halal-certified.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Developing organization from inside and outside is his next plan to lead the market. Internally, he trains local talents using an online approach. Externally, he focuses on digital marketing and ecommerce as solutions to the country\u2019s distribution drawback. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\u201cMy mother played an important role in developing me into who I am today.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>UMESH remembered his late mother whom he deems his best role model in parenting. He always keeps his mother\u2019s photograph and proudly said to others what his mother had taught him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, his father shaped Umesh as an intellectually adventurous man. \u201cThere\u2019s no book in the world that I couldn\u2019t ask for,\u201d he recalled times whenever his father took him to bookshops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is no wonder Umesh has a penchant for books. He reads books of various genres, from fiction to travelogues. Unlike most readers focusing on a single book at a time, he reads several books simultaneously. This year he launched his own book club for employees sharing the same passion of soaking in ocean of words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As daring as he can be in selecting books, Umesh is also known for being a fearless traveler. He has been to least touristy places on earth. \u201cLast December I just went to Antartica,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Being an avid photographer as well, Umesh has previously staged some photo exhibitions for social cause fundraising during his 5-year stint as Country Managing Director in Bangkok. He has self-published a photo book containing photos taken along his trips in India.
